Everything you need to know
on laser stripping!

If you want to use laser stripping, it’s probably because you’ve already heard about it around you. But before using this technology, it is important to be perfectly clear with this industrial stripping technique to know if it is really suitable for your needs.

After all, if you are looking for this technique, it is because your need is based on efficiency!

Features and Benefits of Laser Stripping…
What does this technique consist of?

Do you want to clean your surface while respecting it as much as possible, for the treatment or cleaning of small or large parts “in small series” or “large series”?

Today,
many high-efficiency solutions exist, including the use of lasers for high-speed surface treatment: rust stripping, paint stripping, degreasing operations, etc., all with great precision !

Often known for its powerful and invisible rays as well as its pulses to hIn other energy, laser stripping is one of the most efficient solutions known to date. This unique technology consists of stripping and cleaning all metal surfaces without damaging them.

How does a laser work?

The

laser

concentrates light

energy

, which could be compared to micro projectiles
that attack and pulverize unwanted film (such as rust), at a rate of 200,000 pulses per minute, all with
great ease and above all great respect for the basic materials processed.

Examples : rusted surfaces, aluminium stripping (degreasing of surfaces), paint removal from ironwork, etc.

This technique transforms pollution into a plasma : the pollution is charged with thermal energy and is transformed into a compressed ionized gas , the expansion of which causes a fractionation and expulsion of the dirt, without damaging the substrate or support.

The process involves “recovering” the gases and particles generated during the intervention.

Stripping a metal plate by laser stripping

Let’s take a concrete example, you decide to sand a machine tool, completely rusted, still operational and efficient despite its age, but aesthetically “mediocre”.

You know for a fact that you are going to spend a lot, a lot, a lot… of time for an unsatisfactory result bordering on “can do better”.

“With laser stripping, the toughest coatings will be stripped instantly, without the slightest effort or fatigue.”
An impeccable result, your surface will be as good as new!

Why use this process?

Laser stripping has many advantages, it respects your entire surface while stripping and cleaning surfaces in an integrated way. The laser can reach the most difficult surfaces without any physical contact. Consider that there are different treatments.

Before using this process, it is important to note the nature of the basic materials, what material you want to remove from the surface and of course what cleaning force you need.

The 10 Benefits of Laser Cleaning

  1. Respect for the surface (rust, paint, oil, soot, etc.)
  2. Allows the toughest coatings to be treated without damaging or altering surfaces
  3. No use of reagent
  4. Environmentally friendly suction and filtration system
  5. Removes coating in specific areas (even out of reach)
  6. Usable indoors and outdoors
  7. Non-contact process
  8. Solvent-free
  9. Compliance with environmental standards
  10. No noise pollution

Examples of applications and sectors of activity

  • Rust pickling, oxidation
  • Cleaning moulds, plastics, rubber, tyres…
  • Food pickling (pickling of mussels, waffles, etc.)
  • Roll stripping thousand stitches (anylox)
  • Industrial paint stripping, epoxy paint (mono or multi-layer)
  • Stripping welded bead
  • Wood stripping (soot, fire or city pollution)
  • Automobile industry
  • Ideal for surface preparation

In summary, “high power” laser stripping…

– Allows you to remove pollution such as paint, rust, grease, etc. from all types of materials (except plastics) or surfaces.

– Combines the advantages of thermal stripping with that of mechanical stripping (bombardment of the surface by pulsed laser).

The power of pulsed laser beam technology (or laser process) makes it possible to carry out selective stripping and locate on coatings or parts while respecting the base material, without the use of consumables (solvents, abrasives, etc.): the energy absorbed generates a plasma on the pollution.

The pollution vaporizes in micro-particles and is sucked up either manually (a very great advantage over sandblasting), or via a device installed on the laser lance or gun (above or below the laser beam).

This process can be used either by the manufacturer to increase productivity, via the use of a robot on the production line, in a fully automated or semi-automatic system, or by a service provider in the context of industrial cleaning operations, to strip surfaces very quickly.

Advantages of the process

– mould cleaning (ensures unparalleled cleanliness, without distorting the surface). Ex: rubber mould

– ensures high productivity,

– selective stripping of the target material,

– loosens pollution in fine particles and does not generate secondary waste,

– allows you to strip production machines and tools,

– Surface-friendly technique (laser = non-intrusive stripping solution, without alteration of the support).

IMPORTANT
:

Laser stripping requires the use of EN207 suitable safety glasses

  • Also think: rental (requires P.E.R.L. training), after-sales service, maintenance costs, etc. These are all questions that you want to ask suppliers.
  • Although there are some videos about wood stripping, M.O.P.A. laser stripping is not recommended for this type of surface. The search for the focal length between the shooting gun and the surface can cause the surface to heat up and therefore create a pyrography effect… The laser suitable for this type of work is the Multi-Mode laser (from June 2024 on this site).
  • Laser stripping is also not suitable for the treatment of plastic surfaces. This type of surface absorbs the energy emitted by the laser source in a gargantuan way: as a result, the plastic “softens”, burns, and emits toxic gases.
  • For “deep” rust stripping operations, we recommend the use of a CW type continuous wave laser
