DRY ICE BLASTING FOR AUTOMOTIVE SUPPLIERS

Restoration through dry ice cleaning at an automotive supplier: cleaning sun visor manufacturing molds. This video is from the section Dry ice blasting applications in videos.

Dry ice blasting operation on sun visor mold

  • Industry : Sun visor manufacturing
  • Treatment purpose : Sun visor mold
  • Equipment used : ATX25

Le cryogenic cleaning, in this video, consists of projecting dry ice particles using compressed air, to clean sun visor production molds:

- Removal of production residues, vinyl and foam polyurethane.

In this case, the use of the pneumatic ATX25 equipment enables water-free cleaning, and effectively replaces solvents and sandpaper, given the properties of solid CO2.

How does it work?

Dry ice, in pellet form, is introduced into the hopper of a dry ice blasting machine.
Like the sandblasting technique, dry ice is projected at high speed. This results in a sequence of 3 physical phenomena which occur in the following order:

Le mechanical shock : carbon dioxide in solid form is mixed with a compressed air flow from a compressor. The ice gains kinetic energy. This is then projected through a firing hose, a gun, and a spray nozzle. Upon impact, it creates micro-fractures in the contaminants.

Le thermal shock or thermal effect: the temperature difference (between the substrate and the contaminant) caused by the contact of dry ice on the pollutant creates a separation of the pollutants

Finally, the sublimation* or the transition of dry ice from solid to gaseous state, in a ratio of 1 to 700, removes the residue through a blast effect. (* : solid CO₂ does not pass through the liquid phase upon impact)

What are the advantages of dry ice blasting for an automotive supplier?

Industrial cleaning uses chemical products (detergents, solvents) and methods that are poorly or inadequately suited to cleaning production lines in current operations.
High-pressure cleaning uses water as a cleaning agent, but can cause rust or electrical shorts on a production line, which requires disassembling the process for degreasing or descaling in a dedicated area.

Unfortunately in this case, even though using a pressure washer (high-pressure cleaning equipment) is economical, cleaning sun visor production molds is impossible...
Dry cleaning is the only solution, and dry ice blasting is a solution using carbon dioxide in solid form, with no water whatsoever!
Furthermore, the hardness of dry ice is comparable to that of chalk, so the technique is non-abrasive.

Dry ice blasting can also be used for deburring and restoring hydraulic units

Did you know?

Dry ice blasting is used not only by automotive suppliers, but also by the food and beverage industry for cleaning processes.
Moreover, this technique is commonly used for decontamination and effectively replaces cleaning products.
Dry ice blasting is primarily reserved for cleaning extremely delicate surfaces. For industrial maintenance, the use of dry ice particles in 3 mm format is more suitable for cleaning coatings.
