How to handle dry ice safely?

La Carbon dioxide ice,also called "dry ice" or "solid carbon dioxide" is the solid form of carbon dioxide or CO2 gas (at its atmospheric concentration of 0.04%, CO2 is odorless).
Dry ice is used for: freezing and refrigeration during food transport, chemistry samples, also used in wine production, for dry ice blasting or dry ice cleaning, as well as for creating smoking cocktails, fog effects at events or for other special effects on stage or in film. However, handling, transporting, or storing this ice must be accompanied by certain precautions.

Dry ice: where to buy and how to transport it?

You can obtain dry ice from gas suppliers (for large quantities: + 20 kg), as well as from their distributors.

In any case, it is important to transport it dry ice by taking the precautions mentioned below, in order not only to optimize sa preservation, but alsoto prevent the accidents.

If you are a private individual:

  • Never transport more than 20 kg of dry ice in your vehicle.

(Whether you are a private individual or professional:

  • Transport the dry ice in a dedicated container: no airtight boxes! Optionally, non-airtight coolers.
  • La sublimation (transition from solid to gaseous state) could at best damage the container, at worst cause injury. Ideally: use polystyrene boxes or containers dedicated to transporting this type of cargo.
  • To optimize ice preservation, place your transport box in a cardboard box, and wrap it all in a survival blanket.
  • Due to sublimation, plan to order enough ice, especially if you won't use it immediately. Weight loss is around 8 to 10% per day (24 hours). This of course depends on the outside temperature.
