Dry ice safety precautions
The use, transportation, and handling of solid carbon dioxide require special precautions...
1- Handle with care
Dry ice is said to be in its pure state when at a temperature of -78.5°.
It is therefore extremely cold. It must therefore be handled with great care. Generally, the wearing of safety glasses and gloves is recommended.
In direct contact with skin, dry ice can cause severe burns. During events or in food service, it is advisable to use glass tongs to handle dry ice cubes.
Dry ice suppliers in Lyon must inform you about the type of protective equipment you should have!
2- Store dry ice in a safe location
When you buy dry ice, make sure to store it in a sufficiently ventilated area.
Dry ice produces a large amount of carbon dioxide gas that can be dangerous to your health or that of people present in the storage area.
Carbon dioxide gas is odorless and colorless. If inhaled in large quantities, it can have serious health consequences.
3- Do not ingest dry ice
Even though its temperature is extremely cold, dry ice burns. It is therefore essential not to leave it within reach of children.
Dry ice cubes can sometimes be confused with candies.
Any ingestion or direct contact with skin could have serious consequences and requires immediate medical attention.
Your dry ice supplier in Lyon must inform you of the dangers of using dry ice.

4- Never put dry ice in a sealed or airtight glass container
Dry ice produces carbon dioxide gas. This gas expands when it is released.
If dry ice is placed in a hermetically sealed glass container (jar with its lid, sealed bottle, etc.), the container will explode and cause injury.
During the chemical reaction between dry ice and a liquid, the container used must be open and placed in a well-ventilated room.
5- Use an appropriate vehicle to transport dry ice
When transporting dry ice, carbon dioxide gas can spread into the car's interior.
This is why it is strictly forbidden to transport more than 20 kg of dry ice in a private vehicle.
In any case, for passenger safety, it is essential to keep the windows open.
For larger quantities, call on professionals.
6- Keep animals away
As with children, it is important to take precautions if animals are in the room where dry ice is being handled.
If dry ice is stored or handled in a poorly ventilated area, small animals such as pet birds or cats could be in danger of death.
Remember that dry ice is used to eliminate rats.
Dry ice for industrial cleaning
In addition to its refrigerating power (temperature of -80°c), dry ice can be used as a stripping agent, as a replacement for acid, for certain cleaning operations.
Respecting the health of operators, spraying dry ice on surfaces allows the elimination of detergents, solvents and other products that could generate secondary waste to be reprocessed.
