Dry ice blasting on wooden shutters

This article and video titled dry ice blasting on wooden shutters are taken from the section dry ice cleaning applications. Dry ice blasting wood does not generate dust. Indeed, the media used is dry ice, which has a hardness of only 2 Mohs, the same as chalk.

Dry ice blasting and restoration of wood surfaces

Dry ice blasting on wooden shutter (softwood) covered with paint

  • Treatment purpose : Wooden shutter (pine)
  • Equipment used : ATX25-E

Dry ice blasting on wooden shutters is one of the flagship applications of dry ice cleaning. Unlike soda blasting, this process does not use any abrasive.

This process is similar to sandblasting technique: you introduce inside the hopper of the blaster, some Carbon dioxide ice in the form of pellets or mini-cylinders.

The projection of the dry ice is carried out usingcompressed air (compressor), a spray gun and nozzles.

How does it work?

Upon impact of the Carbon dioxide ice with the contamination to be treated, it cracks and peels off the surface: soft wood shutter.

Three phenomena then occur:

  • The impact generates a mechanical action (cracking of the contamination),
  • The intense cold of the dry ice shrinks the contamination: thermal action,
  • Finally, the dry ice changes from solid to gaseous state and expands 700 times its volume, blowing away the contamination: this is sublimation.

Benefits of dry ice blasting on wooden shutters

The benefits of dry ice blasting on wooden shutters are numerous:

- Removal of contaminants does not require solvents or strippers,

- No need for a heat gun or scraper either,

- The work is fast and does not generate excessive dust

For a quality finish, you can complete the blasting operation by sanding with sandpaper.

Finally, if the wood risks being marked or having a brushed effect, you can consider using the dry ice blasting or the use of dry ice mixed with abrasive for more powerful blasting: rust, wheel rim blasting... You can thus use baking soda for graffiti removal, to strip varnish. The granulate used will depend on the type of contamination on the surface to be blasted: paints, oxidation... on wooden furniture, metal surfaces...

Sandblasting stripping

Comparable to sandblasting technique, the dry ice blasting is as precise and gentle as manual sandpaper stripping...

Did You Know?

Dry ice blasting is primarily used in industrial applications, but this process is increasingly being adopted by private users as well, particularly for degreasing car engines, dry cleaning building facades... to clean all surfaces without risk of damage.
