Dry ice cleaning today
The world has evolved, and with it its share of progress and leading techniques, bringing the emergence of a new kind of contaminants.
Current industrial cleaning techniques are not necessarily those that deliver the best results.
To attempt to remove contaminants, products are very frequently used which, for the vast majority of them—solvents, detergents—often provide mediocre results and involve secondary waste treatment. Examples: soiled rags with pollutant, abrasive mixed with contaminant...
However, there is a technology that is truly beneficial both to the environment and in terms of profit, and most importantly in terms of effectiveness.
What is this technology called? The dry ice cleaning.
How does dry ice blasting work?
Le dry ice cleaning relies on the projection of Carbon dioxide ice (solid CO₂ at –78.5 °C) using compressed air flow. This process effectively removes contaminants without water, chemicals, or abrasion. For more information on dry ice blasting, it is essential to understand how it works and the physical principles on which it is based.
Dry ice is used in the form of 3 mm pellets. It is stored in the hopper of the dry ice blasting machine, then carried into a compressed air stream via a metering system. The mixture is then projected at high speed through a hose and spray nozzle toward the surface to be treated.
The compressed air required can come from:
- an industrial network
- a workshop network
- an electric or thermal compressor
A technology based on three physical effects
Dry ice blasting operates on a combination of three phenomena:
Mechanical effect
Dry ice pellets, projected at high speed, impact the surface and create microfractures in contaminants (grease, paint, adhesives, etc.). This action is related to the kinetic energy generated during projection.
Thermal effect (temperature differential)
The extremely low temperature of dry ice causes thermal shock. The contamination shrinks more rapidly than the substrate, which facilitates its removal without damaging the surface.
Sublimation effect
Upon contact with the surface, dry ice instantly transitions from a solid state to a gaseous state (volume multiplied by approximately 700). This expansion creates a blast effect that dislodges residues.

Dry ice cleaning: an eco-friendly treatment that does not require secondary waste reprocessing
Dry ice cleaning is truly a cleaning technique eco-friendly. Indeed, unlike the use of sandblasting, or abrasive blasting, or wet blasting or high-pressure cleaning, it does not generate secondary waste to be processed.
The dry ice cleaning technique causes removed dirt to fall by gravity. As a general rule, a quick sweep or the use of vacuum cleaners (or vacuuming) is sufficient!
The costs associated with waste processing disappear.
Dry ice blasting is professional cleaning par excellence!
For degreasing your surfaces, or for removing all types of dirt: ink, varnish, adhesive... or even for removing food residues, this process is ideal.
Without chemicals and without cleaning products, to ensure exemplary cleanliness of your production processes, Cryoblaster® dry ice cleaning equipment allows, through the projection of dry ice pellets (carbon dioxide), dry cleaning of surfaces to be treated: no oxidation possible, dry ice contains no water.
Solid carbon dioxide (compacted dry ice) is an excellent low-temperature degreaser.
For cleaning in the food industry, or for interventions or decontamination after disaster, or to treat surfaces with non-abrasive CO₂ pellets or beads, Cryoblaster® dry ice cleaning machines are the essential tools for service providers and industrial companies.
All the advantages of dry ice cleaning: dry process, non-abrasive, economical
- Dry ice cleaning is a dry process. Since solid CO₂ contains no moisture traces, you can consider cleaning an electrical cabinet with power off or dry cleaning after fire.
- Dry ice cleaning is non-abrasive, unlike sandblasting or soda blasting, because the hardness of solid CO₂ is comparable to that of chalk; it is therefore respectful of treated surfaces.
- Dry ice cleaning is much faster than traditional cleaning methods: at least 4 times and up to 8 times faster. It requires little to no disassembly.
- Unlike sandblasting or using a pressure washer, the service can be performed on-site: no water, no sand…
- Using dry ice cleaning in the food and beverage industry helps slow the proliferation of the following bacteria:
E. coli, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella enteritidis, all 3 responsible for foodborne illness.
- Another significant advantage: the process is non-toxic
- The dry ice blasting process allows for numerous applications: degreasing, removing rust bloom, removing graffiti, stickers… Cleaning car engines or rims. Additionally, dry ice blasting allows limiting production downtime: production lines are cleaned up to 8 times faster than traditional methods.
- Thanks to the onboard pressure regulator, you can now perform edge trimming on plastic parts. The process is fast and effective, and complies with environmental protection standards using an electric compressor.
- You can also call on the services of a cleaning company or enterprise by clicking on the Directory link (Menu) and entering your address in the search bar: for cleaning electrical cabinets, plastic or rubber molds, or for treating or removing graffiti…
