Dry ice blasting operation dry ice cleaning for food and beverage on packaging machine in the dairy product manufacturing sector.
Cleaning interior and exterior frames by dry ice blasting dry ice eliminates the use of detergents, or solvents and water, which can locally promote the development of bacteria such as E. coli, Listeria... Although by definition this process is not a disinfection system.
The process is highly fast and allows cleaning of clean en gentleness stainless steel surfaces (frames, conveyor chains), sensors, lubrication supply circuits, pneumatic components...
How does it work? Explanation of the dry ice cleaning process
Dry ice is introduced into the hopper of the dry ice blasting machine. The dry ice particles are sprayed using compressed air or pressurized air (compressor), a firing hose, a gun and a projection nozzle.
- The projection of Carbon dioxide ice on soiled surfaces, loosens by micro-impacts the dirt. In fact, solid CO2 pellets become charged with kinetic energy and create a mechanical shock ou mechanical effect on pollutants.
- This phenomenon is facilitated by the very low temperature of dry ice: -80 degrees: thedirt comes loose due to its own contraction, caused by the very low temperature of the ice (-80 degrees). This is called the thermal shock ou thermal effect.
- When dry ice changes from solid to gaseous state, without passing through the liquid phase after micro-impact, it literally blows the dirt away: a "sweep" or "vacuum" effect is sufficient. This is called the sublimation.
Unlike high-pressure cleaning, dry ice blasting is dry cleaning.
The process works similarly to sandblasting. However, the abrasive is replaced by solid carbon dioxide with no water or detergent.
It can be used in food processing, aerospace cleaning, electrical cabinet restoration, pharmaceutical industry, and more.
P.S: since dry ice cleaning is a very fast process, the surface temperature of treated materials is 8 to 12 degrees lower compared to ambient temperature.
What are the advantages of dry ice cleaning in food and beverage?
As mentioned in the introduction, dry ice blasting cleaning radically slows the development of bacteria responsible for food-borne infections.
Often used in industrial cleaning, this technique does not use chemical products or conventional cleaning products: solvents, alcohol, acids...
This results in various advantages including:
- A non-abrasive treatment given the hardness of solid carbon dioxide, comparable to chalk: damaging a stainless steel surface is impossible with this process!
- No waste other than the pollutant removed: no wastewater treatment unlike using a high-pressure cleaner
- Fast and effective : up to 8 times faster than traditional methods
- The dry ice allows cleaning production lines: the ice transforms into carbon dioxide gas on impact. Disassembly for cleaning in a separate area is then eliminated or minimized. food-grade Dry ice blasting operation in a chocolate factory: conveyor chain

Whether your goal is decontamination or surface stripping, dry ice blasting generates no secondary waste (no abrasive dust).
Application examples:
- Foundry cleaning: mold impressions
- ideal for industrial maintenance
- highly recommended for surface preparation before painting
- post-disaster cleaning
In food processing, dry ice blasting allows cleaning stainless steel
faster and more reliably than any other method, thanks to the temperature difference of the contaminant compared to the surface and the blowing effect during ice sublimation at a ratio of What equipment to use for dry ice blasting in food processing? . One could speak of micro-explosions..
