Dry ice cleaning for effective anti-graffiti treatment
What is dry ice blasting?
Le dry ice cleaning is a surface treatment technique based on the use of dry ice, also called solid CO2. This substance has the unique property of sublimating (passing directly from solid to gaseous state) at room temperature, releasing a very cold jet that can reach -78°C.
This process allows you to remove all types of contaminants – particularly graffiti – without damaging or moisturizing the treated surfaces.
In this case, we add an abrasive (sodium bicarbonate) to increase cleaning power. The treatment remains ecological and fast. This is then called a technique of dry ice blasting.
How does anti-graffiti treatment through dry ice cleaning work?
The method is based on the combined action of three factors:
- The thermal effect: the thermal shock caused by the passage of the cryogenic jet (projection of dry ice pellets at -78°C) on the graffiti paint creates shrinkage and fragmentation of the paint.
- The kinetic effect: the jet is projected at very high speed toward the surface, which allows mechanical removal of paint residue.
- The sublimation effect: as the dry ice vaporizes upon contact with the surface, the carbon dioxide absorbs and carries away the broken particles.
It should be added that the projection of abrasive, here baking soda sodium bicarbonate, will accelerate the process, as the bicarbonate will generate micro-grooves within the graffiti paint itself.
It should be noted that the CO2 used during treatment is sourced directly from sources that are either natural (volcanic) or industrial (ammonia production, etc.). CO2 is therefore redirected to give it a second useful life, making dry ice cleaning or more precisely in this case dry ice blasting, a technique ecological et sustainable.

What are the advantages of dry ice cleaning for anti-graffiti treatment?
1. Surface protection
Unlike traditional methods such aschemical cleaning unlike sandblasting, dry ice cleaning preserves the integrity of treated materials. This non-abrasive method is therefore perfectly suited for facades made of stone, brick, concrete, wood or even glass. The addition of an abrasive mixed with the Carbon dioxide ice thanks to our abrasive kit, allows fast treatment, but especially less resource-intensive than sandblasting ou l'soda blasting.
2. Efficiency and speed
Dry ice cleaning rapidly and effectively eliminates all types of graffiti, whether created using acrylic paint, oil-based paint, epoxy, lacquer, etc. Moreover, no drying time is needed, because the Carbon dioxide ice dries very quickly allowing treated spaces to be available almost immediately.
3. Little to no residue...
CO2 sublimation generates no residue, with the exception of the media used and the paint particles themselves, which are quickly evacuated by the jet. This characteristic makes dry ice blasting (dry ice cleaning + abrasive) particularly suitable for areas where the presence of dust or chemical residues must be minimized, such as hospitals, historical monuments, or industrial sites.
4. Environmental protection
Dry ice cleaning also stands out for its low environmental impact:
- No use of chemical products and therefore no water pollution or toxic discharge.
- The CO2 used in the process comes from recycling, which limits its carbon footprint.
- Due to its high efficiency, this method consumes fewer resources (energy, secondary waste reprocessing) than other more traditional techniques.
When should you use dry ice cleaning for anti-graffiti treatment?
Dry ice cleaning can be used both as a preventive measure and in response to the appearance of graffiti on your facades:
- As prevention: periodic treatment of your surface will limit graffiti adhesion and promote rapid removal in case of vandalism.
- As a reaction: If your facade has already suffered damage, don't hesitate to call on a dry ice cleaning service provider to restore a like-new appearance without deteriorating your coating or polluting the environment.
In short, dry ice cleaning represents an innovative solution that respects your property to combat graffiti on your buildings. Its effectiveness, speed, and low environmental impact make it the method of choice for preserving your surface and providing a pleasant living environment for your occupants.
